Antigua and Barbuda

A beach a day? Right this way! 365 beaches dot the coastline of Antigua, the largest of the islands comprising the Caribbean country of Antigua and Barbuda. Mondays might be for a golden, lively bay, while Thursdays take you to a secluded strip suited for diving into jade waters. Save Sundays for sunset views from a hilltop barbecue party, complete with steel-band jams, good vibes and cold drinks.

Destination facts

Language

English and Antiguan creole

What to bring back

Maritime mementos from the gift shop at Nelson’s Dockyard, Susie’s Hot Sauce and jewellery featuring lavender-coloured jade.

What to eat

Fish (often grouper or red snapper), ducana (seasoned sweet potatoes in banana leaves), goat water (goat stew), fungee (grits-like side of cornmeal and okras) and tropical fruit or coconut pies.

Fun fact

Antigua’s highest peak rises about 1,300 feet above the island’s southern tip, part of a verdant nature reserve and national park perfect for tranquil hikes through tropical forests. The summit once bore the unappealing name of Boggy Peak, but was renamed in 2009 in honour of Barack Obama. That’s right, Antigua’s modest mountain is called…Mount Obama!
