St Lucia

Saint Lucia

Small, but sublime, the island of Saint Lucia bursts with breathtaking vistas. The forest-capped peaks of volcanic spires rise from the sea, waves lapping golden shores. Blissful blue coves beckon beach breakers looking for a dip with a view. If you can tear yourself away from the coastline, adventure inland for a rainforest hike, a mud bath in wild springs or a stroll through colonial ruins.

Saint Lucia travel guide

Destination facts

Language

English and Saint Lucian French Creole.

What to bring back

Colourful wooden masks by local artist Zaka, cocoa sticks to make what locals call cocoa tea (hot chocolate) at home and an album of traditional Saint Lucian folk music.

What to eat

Fresh seafood, conch fritters, fried plantain, callaloo (a green leaf vegetable side dish) and the island’s national dish: green figs (what locals call green bananas) and saltfish.

Fun fact

It might be hard to believe, but Saint Lucia is the only self-governing country in the world named after a woman! That woman is none other than Saint Lucy of Syracuse, a Christian martyr. Named by stranded French sailors and initially colonized by the French, the island was also on-and-off controlled by the British who referred to it as Helen of the West Indies.
