Regional specialties of the Dalmatian coast: brudet (fisherman’s stew), buzara (shellfish in a wine broth), octopus salad, pašticada na dalmatinski (braised beef with gnocchi), bitva (a side of swiss chard and potatoes), oily fish like sardines and soparnik (swiss chard pie).
Fun fact
While many know of Dubrovnik’s connection to seven fictional kingdoms (Game of Thrones), few know of its role as the capital of the very real Republic of Ragusa, an important maritime state from 1358 to 1808. The republic was, at different times, a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Austria, the French Empire and the Kingdom of Italy. In short, the city is no stranger to drama between rulers.
