Algiers

The capital of Algeria welcomes you with open arms! Enjoy life by the Mediterranean coastline and look out for some of Algiers’ most famous tourist attractions, like the Great Mosque, the National Library, the Bardo National Museum, and several monuments and forts. One thing is certain; it’s perfect for the inquisitive history lover who wants to learn about the foundations of modern-day North Africa.

Visit Algiers: get started

Algiers will keep you busy, no matter how long you stay. A great place to start is the Notre-Dame d'Afrique Basilica, who’s beauty is exemplified by its neo-byzantine architecture and Spanish-Moorish décor. Next, visit North Africa’s most well-preserved Roman ruins in Djémila via the northern coast. Take some time to also see the Martyr’s Memorial that commemorates the Algerian War, and make sure to go to the Casbah of Algiers to get some souvenirs.

Destination facts

Language

Arabic (official), though various Berber dialects are also widely spoken.

What to bring back

The best snacks you can bring back from Algiers are sweet and succulent dates from the old Casbah marketplace. Many of its vendors also sell hand-painted boxes, pottery, woodwork, and traditional tunics and caftans.

What to eat

For breakfast, shakshouka is a favourite, made with poached eggs and spices like cumin and paprika. Méchoui is another popular dish–a lamb or sheep spit-roasted over a barbecue, and berkoukes (couscous soup with optional meat) is perfect for the colder months.

Fun fact

During the Second World War, the city of Algiers–then under French occupation–became the official headquarters of the Allied forces in North Africa.
