Huatulco

If you’ve got Mexico on your mind, we recommend giving Huatulco a try. Why? Let’s start with its nine, beautiful bays dotted along the southern Pacific coast, each surrounded by untouched, protected tropical woodland. Now add a dash of the Oaxaca state's unique culture and cuisine, best sampled in Huatulco’s low-key town centre. The clincher? The resorts, spread out and isolated, invite indulgence on your own slice of this natural paradise.

What to bring back

Handwoven rugs, bags or pieces of clothing, alebrijes (colourful wood-carved animal figurines) and a bottle of mezcal.

What to eat

Staples of Oaxacan cuisine: anything with mole (a complex, chili-based sauce), quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese), chapulines (grasshoppers!) and tlayudas (a large tortilla topped with refried beans, meat and more).

Fun fact

Before resorts started lining the Oaxaca state’s Pacific coast, the area around Huatulco was mainly known for growing coffee. You can still find coffee plantations dotting the region, so plan excursions to nearby coffee farms like Finca El Pacífico or La Gloria to learn the local roasting process and score organic beans right from the source.
