Fun fact
Mexico City was actually built on a lake! In the 12th century, the Aztecs founded the city of Tenochtitlan on an islet within Lake Texcoco. After the Spanish conquered it in 1521, they eventually drained the lake and expanded the city into their capital of Mexico City, briefly referred to as Mexico-Tenochtitlan. You can still see remnants of the original Aztec city with a visit to Templo Mayor!
