When to visit
Dry season from December to April has the most comfortable weather, but it’s also the busiest time of year, so if you’re looking to skip the crowds, go between May and November.
What to bring back
Colombia is famous for its emeralds so fashion-forward travellers might splurge on some jewelry, traditional Colombian handicrafts like woven bags, hats and wallets, local spirits like caña flecha (sugarcane liquor) and Colombian coffee, which is world-famous for its quality.
What to eat
Ceviche, pargo frito (fried red snapper) served with arroz de coco (coconut rice) or arepa (stuffed flatbreads). For something sweet, enjoy some local tropical fruits, like soursop or mango, or choose traditional desserts like cocadas (coconut candies) and tamarind balls.
Fun fact
Cartagena is affectionately known as La Heroica, the Heroic City, because it was the first city in Colombia to proclaim its independence from Spain with its Declaration of Independence. This act is still celebrated for a week every year around November 11.
