How to Spend 3 Days in Halifax
The Best Things to Do in Halifax
From its stunning coastal setting to its vibrant culture and the friendliest of locals, Halifax shines. Start planning your trip with our 3-day guide!
Day 1: By Sea
Why wait? Start your day right on the waterfront! There’s no better place to do so than at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, where you can breakfast on the city’s best gourmet treats and organic coffee. Stroll by the harbour after your visit and soak in the views, stopping to admire all the different nautical vessels, from sailboats to the ferry that can take you across to Dartmouth.
If the weather permits, hop on one of the boat tours to explore the city by sea—try the Tall Ship Silva for one with a historical twist! Cold weather or rain might make you opt for a visit to the fascinating Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic instead! For dinner, nip into one of the city’s top seafood spots: The Five Fisherman, Murphy’s on the Water or Shuck Seafood + Raw Bar.
Finish your day soaking in the city’s Celtic heritage at one of the many traditional Irish pubs, like Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub or The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse, where Irish tunes and a good stout await.
Day 2: By Land
Today, we stick to land-only activities, but don’t worry, you’re never too far from sweet sea views when you’re in Halifax. Start your day at Edna, a trendy breakfast and brunch spot over in the North End. After that, you’re just minutes away from one of the city’s top attractions: the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, a star-shaped fort that’s protected the city since 1749. Time your visit to witness the firing of the Noon Gun!
Continue to the Old Town Clock, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks before wandering over to the gorgeous Halifax Public Gardens, home to various flora and tree species. For a spot of lunch, pop into Darrell’s Restaurant for their famous burgers. It’s just the fuel you’ll need to take on a shopping spree up and down downtown’s Argyle Street.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Halifax without enjoying some form of live music! Check out what’s on at one of the city’s best venues: The Carleton, The Seahorse Tavern, The Lower Deck, and many more. If you’re hungry for a late-night snack, you have to try a legendary donair! Head to Tony's Famous Donairs & Pizza, Johnny K's Authentic Donairs or King of Donair.
Day 3: On the Road
Ready to see more sites? Today, we hit the road to explore some of Nova Scotia’s top attractions! Need breakfast before we go? Pop into Annie’s Place Café!
Hit a gorgeous coastal road that will take you from Halifax to Lunenburg, a charming, historic fishing village and a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the way, stop at Peggy’s Cove, home to Canada’s most photographed lighthouses. Admire the view from the lighthouse’s rocky perch and grab a lobster roll (you can never get enough!) before getting back on the road.
Once arrived in Lunenburg, just about an hour from Halifax, wander through the colourful, incredibly photogenic streets. Visit the replica of the historic Bluenose ship (yes, the one on our coins!), take a tour of the Ironworks Distillery, or sample some heavenly fish and chips from the South Shore Fish Shack.
Back in Halifax, you deserve a nightcap at the Alexander Keith’s Brewery or one of the many microbreweries scatted across the North End.
