Canada’s Best Eats and Treats
An Appetizer to Wet Your Vacation Appetite
Oh Canada! Everyone knows about our maple syrup and poutine, but what if we told you there’s more to the Great White North than butter tarts and beaver tails. From Vancouver to St. John’s, read on for our list of Canada’s most scrumptious eats coast to coast.
The Atlantic
Take a deep breath and get a taste of that fresh Atlantic air. Canada’s Maritimes are where some of our oldest cities are, but that doesn’t mean the food you’ll find there is old-fashioned. Just take a look at Nova Scotia, where you’ll find an Atlantic twist on a Greek classic: the Halifax Donair, made with a trademark sweet and seasoned sauce of condensed milk, vinegar and garlic. Of course, the region’s Acadian influence can’t be ignored; tuck into a wild blueberry grunt for dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Seafood lovers will be at home thanks to the numerous lobster fisheries found nearby, so enjoy your fresh lobster rolls like nobody’s watching. Interested in having a taste for yourself? Central Canada
Between the towering spires of downtown Toronto’s financial district, and the cobblestoned streets of Old Montreal and Quebec City are where you’ll find some of Canada’s most iconic eats. In the northern reaches of Ontario and Quebec is where maple syrup production takes centre stage. Visit a sugar shack to satisfy your sweet tooth with maple-based treats, before indulging in a poutine topped with peameal bacon, or Montreal-style smoked meat. If you’re interested in trying world cuisines, Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods offer an incredible variety: visit Eglinton West for Caribbean, Rexdale for South Asian, or The Danforth for some Greek and Turkish. Likewise, you can’t go wrong with visiting la belle province! Don’t tell New York, but Montreal bagels are the best you can get. Starting to salivate? Us too… Have a look at our Flight & Hotel packages to make your culinary dreams a reality.
The Prairies
You might not think of Canada’s western plains first when it comes to cuisine, but we’re here to treat you to what makes the plains so great. Sink your teeth into some juicy steaks, as Alberta’s beef is renowned for its tender quality, or take a walk on the wild side with a cut of bison instead. If you’re feeling truly adventurous, order a plate of prairie oysters next time you’re at the bar and grill—just don’t ask the chef where they come from. Starting to feel hungry? Snack on some pemmican (a mixture of dried meats, fruits and fats) or bannock (a type of fry bread) the Indigenous way for a mid-day pick-me-up. For some lighter fare to satisfy your sweet tooth, have a slice of Saskatoon berry pie (the city was named after the berry!). Ready to hit the road? Check out our Flight & Hotel packages.
The West Coast
We’re almost at the end of our culinary journey, but we don’t want to hear any (stomach) grumbling! We’ve saved the West for last. Starting off sweet: we have the iconic Nanaimo Bar, a no-bake dessert made of a wafer or coconut crumb base, custard icing, and chocolate ganache that’ll have you reaching for another—but don’t fill up on dessert! British Columbia is where you’ll find the freshest salmon in Canada, so why not have it smoked, seared, or sashimi? Thanks to its proximity, the West Coast is home to Canada’s best in East Asian cuisine, fusion or otherwise. In fact, the famous California roll was invented in Vancouver. Budding sommeliers can enjoy wine from the renowned Okanagan Valley, but you can sip from a London Fog (another Vancouver invention!) if you’re looking for something warm and soothing. Tempted by these tastes? Book a guided tour and get the most out of the great outdoors or choose a Flight & Hotel package to suit your palette.
