Austria

The Baroque style of Austria’s architecture will bring a sense of enlightenment to any traveller. Find whimsy in Vienna, the capital city, where you can catch all kinds of concerts or navigate royal palaces and museums for a history lesson into the country’s past. Then, discover the glacial wonders of the Austrian Alps and the birthplace of the genius composer known as Mozart in Salzburg, and follow the Von Trapp’s storyline while taking a day trip to where parts of The Sound of Music was filmed in Hallstatt.

Visit Austria: get started

A tour of Austria calls for a bit of background music wherever you choose to roam. While looking for things to do in Vienna, find out why some of history’s most decorated composers, orchestras, opera houses and concert halls have called this city home. Next, take the alpine route while skiing through pathways in Innsbruck before seeing a Tyrolean folk show later in the evening. To close off your visit, check out Salzburg’s stunning attractions, like the Salzburg Cathedral.

Destination facts

Language

German is the official language, though Croatian, Slovenian and Hungarian are recognized in some regions.

What to bring back

Chocolates, schnapps and Austrian wine are often bought by travellers, but we also recommend bringing back artistic souvenirs like a Gustav Klimt replica or a Beethoven-related souvenir from the Beethoven Pasqualati House in Vienna.

What to eat

The Wiener Schnitzel (fried meat) as well as the Viennese Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) are considered two of the country’s national dishes, while other favourites like Tafelspitz (boiled veal or beef) and the delicious Linzer Torte short cake are also served in most Austrian households.

Fun fact

The largest ice cave in the world is located in the Austrian town of Werfen in the Austrian state of Salzburg. Eisriesenwelt—or “World of Ice Giants,” offers views of caverns, tunnels and icicles dangling from above. Totaling about 40 kilometres in length, make sure to watch your step while exploring this unique labyrinth!
