When to visit
Summers are when the city is at its liveliest, though it can get quite hot and humid. Winter can be fun, thanks to its variety of museums and other indoor activities. Late spring and autumn offer the mildest weather, but the biggest crowds.
What to bring back
Bits of the Berlin Wall, hand-painted and carved bear figures or Steiff’s famous teddy bears (the bear is Berlin’s symbol), Currywurst ketchup, depictions of the city’s Little Light Men (the traffic light symbols available printed on apparel or as figurines and home décor objects) and various Berlin-based spirits (Berliner Brandstifter gin or Berliner Luft schnapps).
What to eat
Currywurst (sausage with ketchup and curry powder), Eisbein mit Sauerkraut (cured ham hock), Turkish döners and Pfannkuchen (German doughnut also called the Berliner).
Fun fact
Built in 1961 to separate East and West Berlin, the Berlin Wall was the ultimate symbol of the Cold War. When it fell in 1989, East Berliners flocked west for a giant street party, with famous musicians from all-over flying over to perform for the crowds.
