Portugal

Perpetually sunny and naturally stunning, Portugal is picture-perfect. Think hilltop towns amid scenic valleys, rocky cliffs circling golden beaches and cobblestone streets crossing exciting cities. This coastal country colours outside the lines with year-round festivities full of fireworks and fado music. Paint yourself in this romantic portrait, feasting on tasty salt cod and sweet pastéis de nata, or embark on adventures beyond the shore on lush islands and archipelagos.

When to visit

Autumn offers warm ocean temperatures perfect for swimming off the coast, while spring in Portugal is beloved for its blooming landscapes and fewer crowds. For off-shore escapes in the Azores and Madeira, they’re mild all year round.

What to bring back

A colourful, ceramic Rooster of Barcelos figurine, the country’s unofficial symbol, Claus Porto soaps, Madeiran embroidery and rum, traditional Portuguese pottery, Azorean tea and São Jorge cheeses, and vinho verde (green wine).

What to eat

Cod (bacalhau), piri piri chicken, sardines, and salame de chocolate (literally, chocolate salami). If you’re visiting the islands, the Azores are famous for Cozido das Furnas (stews cooked underground through volcanic heat) and fresh seafood, while Madeira is renowned for its wine and passion fruit products.

Fun fact

While the famous rooster is usually gifted for good luck, it also is the product of a legend that claims that a roasted rooster resurrected to prove a man’s innocence. Charged with a crime he didn’t commit, the man pointed to his judge’s cooked poultry and declared it would caw if he was innocent… and it did!
