What to eat

Caldo verde (kale soup), tripas a moda do Porto (a tripe stew) and a francesinha (a Porto-loved sandwich consisting of steak, ham, sausage, topped with a fried egg, melted cheese and a beer and tomato sauce).

Fun fact

People of Porto bear a very interesting moniker—tripeiros—which roughly translates as tripe-eaters. There are many tall tales as to why, the most popular one being that in 1415, the city’s inhabitants donated all their meat to a Portuguese explorer on his way to war and were left to survive off tripe, which also inspired the local dish, tripas a moda do Porto (Porto-style tripe).
